Once the application is completed and all documents, videos or images have been submitted, we will contact the property within one week to finalise the verification.

Providing that all criteria are met, and no information needs to be clarified or re-submitted, the endorsement will be granted after a maximum of two weeks thereafter.

HOW DOES THE SUSTAINABILITY LABEL CONTRIBUTE TO THE WIDER GLOBAL SUSTAINABILITY MOVEMENT AND GOALS?

The overall mission of QALIA’s framework, and the verified members, is to actively demonstrate leadership in sustainable practices for all types of properties which in turn impacts the wider global sustainability goals in the tourism sector.

We wish to personify the leadership of the luxury villa hospitality by raising awareness of their sustainable tourism practices, their effort to reduce their environmental impact, and encouraging the support of local communities.

HOW IS THE LABEL PROMOTED AND MARKETED TO POTENTIAL GUESTS?

Our team uses multiple strategies for the promotion of the label:

  • We run a regular PR campaign with reputed luxury lifestyle and travel magazines that are keen to feature sustainable luxury properties.
  • We nurture close relationships with an increasing number of agencies specialised in luxury villas and hospitality seeking to propose sustainable properties to their clients. This is an opt-out option for each property as we respect everyone’s distribution strategy.
  • We aid each property with how to promote and feature the label during their guests’ booking process. Our label is dedicated to attracting the attention of devoted conscious travellers seeking sustainable experiences, while also raising awareness among curious newcomers to the concept of sustainability in luxury villas.
WHAT WOULD BE THE FEES DUES IF I APPLY FOR SEVERAL LEVELS WITHIN THE SAME YEAR?

Depending on individual cases and when a property has already implemented sustainable practices, several levels can be applied for and awarded within the same 12-month period. However, separate processing fees remain applicable for each level and credit cannot be transferred between levels.

Precise consultations are conducted during our initial interview, and we invite members to submit the various levels together.

ARE YOU A NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANISATION?

We believe in conscious business and were established to help solve problems.

QALIA operates as a for-profit company in that it seeks to maximise revenue and optimise expenses. This allows us to bring high value to our members by attracting top talents rightfully compensated and using state-of-the-art tools and systems to deliver our service.

However, we consider that QALIA and the team have a for-purpose drive to ensure we are also contributing to projects and start-ups that share our values.

As such we have implemented contribution strategies through our partnership with B1G1.com platform and as of 2024 we contribute 1% of our gross revenue to charities working towards the United Nations 17 SDGs.

Over time, a portion of our net profits (after salaries, operating expenses and taxes) will also be made available for seed funding of innovative start-ups tackling environmental, social and economic challenges.

We also invite all our members to join us in this constructive philosophy and double the impact of our mission.

HOW DO YOU ENSURE THAT YOUR SUSTAINABILITY LABEL IS TRANSPARENT, TRUSTWORTHY, AND MEANINGFUL TO BOTH PROPERTY OWNERS AND GUESTS?

To ensure that our sustainability label is transparent, trustworthy, and meaningful to property owners, specialised agencies and guests, we prioritize clear and consistent communication about our verification criteria, assessment process, and ongoing sustainability initiatives.

We also work closely with our members to provide ongoing support and resources to help them implement sustainable practices and meet our criteria. Finally, we collect feedback from property owners and guests to continuously improve and refine our sustainability framework and meet the evolving needs and expectations of the stakeholders.

IS A REMOTE OR RURAL AREA PROPERTY ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?

There is no restriction on geography, destination or type of luxury property (ie chalet, villas, castles, private islands, lodges,…) to become eligible to QALIA.

We consider that each luxury property has a leadership role to play within its environment and community and can be endorsed, provided it meets the sustainability criteria.

HOW MANY ENDORSEMENT LEVELS ARE THERE?

We have 3 endorsement levels: Essentials, Advanced, and Excellence.

Each level is awarded to members who either meet the criteria early on or commit to implementing continuous improvements over time.

Rather than being all or nothing, we created these levels as we understand that not all luxury properties were built to deal with meeting all the criteria at once, but are committed to making changes to do so.

HOW OFTEN DOES A PROPERTY NEED TO BE REASSESSED TO MAINTAIN THE LABEL?

We remain in close contact with all properties as they usually have an improvement plan in place and new criteria are being added over time.

We provide ample notice before adding any requirement. 30 days before the renewal date, we communicate with each property to review their report on the Certification Management System and jointly assess the opportunity to maintain the endorsement.

WHAT HAPPENS IF A PROPERTY DOES NOT MEET THE CRITERIA FOR THE LABEL AFTER BEING ASSESSED?

We consider that becoming sustainable is an inevitable journey and that we all do our best. Our objective is to ensure that EVERY property applying for the label meets our criteria depending on their capacity and surroundings.

For that reason, we establish close cooperation with each property. We start with an initial assessment and conversation to adequately guide future members in the implementation of their practices that are achievable in terms of timing and resources. This takes into consideration the possible restrictions due to their infrastructure or their location which will not affect the endorsement.

CAN A PROPERTY BE ELIGIBLE IF IT IS LOCATED IN A REMOTE OR RURAL AREA?

There is no restriction on geography, destination or type of luxury property (ie chalet, villas, castles, private islands, lodges,…) to become eligible to QALIA.

We consider that each luxury property has a leadership role to play within its environment and community and can be endorsed, provided it meets the sustainability criteria.

WHAT SUPPORT AND RESOURCES ARE PROVIDED TO HELP A PROPERTY MEET THE CRITERIA FOR THE LABEL?

Properties and members receive support and resources from our organisation to help them implement practices and meet the criteria to be endorsed.

This may include access to technical experts, and best practices guidelines and tools, as well as sharing information on a local or larger scale.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REMOTE AND ON-SITE VERIFICATION?

All properties submit evidence documents using our online Certification Management System (CMS), which allows them to be remotely verified.

However, some properties would opt for an on-site verification by one of our team members who would conduct the validation of the documents and verification of the practices.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE WITH OTHER LABELS?

Our vision is for the label and its members to demonstrate a leadership example and showcase that the terms luxury rentals and ethical tourism are closer than the perception would make it.

The label differs from others in being the first one to exclusively focus on luxury properties and establish a partnership relationship with the members. In addition, our specific and extensive list of criteria are crafted to fit with the operations of such properties while generating a meaningful impact.

As a for-purpose company, we are also one of the very few that dedicate a portion of our income to impactful projects.

HOW DO YOU STAY UP-TO-DATE WITH THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS AND TRENDS IN SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AND INCORPORATE THEM INTO YOUR LABEL

At QALIA, we prioritize staying up-to-date with the latest developments and trends in sustainable tourism to ensure that our framework and assessment process reflect the current best practices. We accomplish this through a variety of methods, including attending industry conferences and events, continuous education, and staying in touch with relevant research and publications. We also engage with our peers, other sustainability-focused organizations and experts in the field.

Additionally, we regularly review and update our framework to reflect new developments and best practices in sustainable tourism, always adapting it to the specificities of luxury hospitality, the upcoming regulations and ensuring that our label remains relevant and meaningful in today’s rapidly evolving industry.
